Public images
Published images identify the guest operating system and installed baseline. ce-desktop provides Debian 13, a desktop and Chromium. Headless workloads can use an appropriate non-desktop image. The image reference and its version are part of a reproducible setup; do not assume that a mutable display name identifies identical bytes indefinitely.
Private images
Create a private image from a stopped computer. Programs are not left running in the resulting template, and creation is not a live fork. The API may return an accepted operation before the image is ready. Retain its operation and image IDs, poll the original state, and create a new computer from it only after readiness is established.
Images and snapshots are stored alongside the computers. They are useful for restoring a known environment, but they are not independent backups. Deleting an image can be refused by legal hold with invalid_state and retryable false; a refusal does not change the existing billing state.
Use setup scripts for small reproducible post-boot changes, private images for a larger prepared baseline, and snapshots for recoverable computer state. The API reference gives the actual fields and accepted response variants.
